Dr. O'Neill's research focus is primary CNS lymphoma (PCNSL), and he has led NIH-supported clinical trials and epidemiologic studies in this lethal but potentially curable brain tumor.

Dr. O'Neill is the Enterprise Medical Sub-Specialty Director in the Division of Neuro-Oncology within the Department of Neurology for the Mayo Clinic. Dr. O’Neill holds the academic rank of Professor of Neurology. He has served on National Institutes of Health (NIH) Special Review Panels and committees since 1999, and he serves as a member of The Cancer Genome Atlas Working Group and the Brain Malignancies Steering Committee. Dr. O’Neill is also a member of the editorial board of The Journal of Neuro-Oncology and Neuro-Oncology. Dr. O’Neill has been appointed to numerous national committees that deal with scientific review, policy creation and governance and advisory functions. He has served on National Institutes of Health (NIH) Special Review Panels and committees since 1999, and he serves as a member of The Cancer Genome Atlas Working Group and the Brain Malignancies Steering Committee. He is also on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Neurology’s Neuro-oncology Section and a Charter Member of the Mayo NIH Clinical and Translational Science Award.
